Back in May, we distributed $135,000 to nine different Get Comfortable agency partners whose day-to-day operations had shifted dramatically as a result of COVID-19. Recently, we received a collection of letters written by recipients from Acceptance Recovery Center, underscoring the impact of this mid-year distribution. Here’s one letter that really captured our attention.

It really is hard for me to put into words not only how grateful I am to have been approved for the indigent funds, but also the opportunity it has given me. When I first came into this program, I was hesitant, to say the least. I didn’t know if I could even stay sober, much less work such an intense program and succeed. It took me a few months to finally find a job that stuck, so I got behind financially much faster than expected.

The old me would have thrown in the towel and given up only because things didn’t go my way, or I didn’t see results quick enough. I managed to work two jobs consistently, never calling out or leaving early, but still wasn’t able to make it. Over the next 5 months, it became too much for me to handle and the money that I owed forced me into a very dark, unhealthy headspace. I was ready to throw in the towel and give up. I’m so thankful I didn’t.

The indignent fund request was a last hope for me. I was expecting maybe $100, not $1,500! I’ve had a huge weight lifted. I have a fresh start! This allows me to have the chance to keep focusing on my recovery and to find a better job. I think this honestly affected me more in 5 minutes than anything. I was so close to ruining everything I had been working for, all over money. I could have lost my life over financial struggle. My daughter almost lost her mother.

The night before I was granted the funds, I was broken and I lost it. I cried out to God to please take me from all of this. I was at the edge. It seems silly, but one request saved my recovery and my life.

I will never be able to thank ARC enough for seeing something in me and taking a chance on me. I’m truly grateful from the depths of my soul.

If you made a contribution to the Get Comfortable Fund—whether through leaving a tip at the drive-thru t0 supporting one of our 60 business partners—thank you! We are honored and humbled to be a small part of these individuals’ journeys.
