Explore Mars

Explore Mars heads the Get Curious campaign. The organization will keep providing educational information, mission highlights and laboratory findings as they come in before the landing and for all the months Curiosity will trek over Mars after the landing to educate the public about the mission.

Next May, Explore Mars will be co-sponsoring The Humans-to-Mars (H2M) Summit at the Lisner Auditorium at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. The Summit, taking place May 6-8, 2013, will revolve around the answers to the question “How can we land humans on Mars by 2030?”

H2M will be a comprehensive Mars exploration conference to address the major technical, scientific, and policy related challenges that need to be overcome to send humans to Mars by 2030. The conference will follow a step by step approach of all the aspects of such a mission.

 

ABOUT EXPLORE MARS

The mission of Explore Mars is ‘to make humans a multi-planet species.’

Our programs are aimed at making that happen within the next 20 years, while being safe, well planned and relatively comfortable for the humans we send to Mars. To accomplish this Explore Mars runs technical challenges to stimulate the development and/or improvement of technologies that will make human Mars missions more efficient and feasible.

An example of such a technology is our In Situ Resource Utilisation (ISRU) challenge, as with the present launching technology saving on launch mass is imperative and this makes ‘on site use of recourses’ (ISRU) a preferred method of surface operations. ISRU includes making fuel from the atmosphere on Mars, making water and oxygen from the water ice on Mars and in general using the natural resources of Mars whenever we can. Our objective is to further reduce the mass of already existing ISRU machines and to improve their efficiency. Our immediate goal is to fly a small ISRU machine on the Sample Return Mission to produce on Mars the fuel for the return flight to Earth. This is just one example of the technologies that Explore Mars aims to improve.

Explore mars is committed to make Mars as habitable planet an idea that rests firmly within the general population. The purpose of our Mars Education Challenge is to stimulate science teachers to use Mars in the classroom as a tool to teach the state imposed standard STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) lesson plans in those fields. Teaching children and young adults about all the  aspects of Mars will educate our next generation, and their families, to the possibilities of Mars.
