In 2018, the newly founded Get Artistic program generated over $16,000 that was distributed among six targeted grant opportunities in Athens’ arts community, each of which aligned with Get Artistic’s mission to remove barriers for artists pursuing a sustainable career in the arts. This year, we have expanded the program’s grant funding opportunities with the creation of the Get Artistic DIY Grant, an opportunity specifically for independent, artist- or collective-led projects or events in the Athens community. We are thrilled to share the list of highly varied finalists for the Get Artistic DIY Grant (to fund projects in 2020):

Ad•verse Fest | A two-day festival the first weekend of March showcasing a variety of solo and duo performers who blur the line between the musical, visual, and performative arts. The first Ad•verse Fest was held in March 2019.
Ambassador Sweets: A Vinyl Compilation of Athens Producers | A new project presented by ATHfactor-Liberty Entertainment (ALE) and Creative Director Montu Miller to create a compilation vinyl record featuring Athens hip hop producers. The record will be given out for free and will serve as a time capsule of the current hip hop scene for future generations.
Athens Resonates | A collective of local artists and creative businesses working to raise money for Nuci’s Space and Boys & Girls Club of Athens Music Makers Program through the sale of 7″ records and posters. Partnering artists and businesses donate their time and resources so 100% of the sales benefit the nonprofit organizations.
Clip Art Presents | A music booking and event production collective working with local music venues and community events such as the Odd Street Block Party (Athens).
echoColors | A new initiative to create a mobile natural dye lab that would provide educational hands-on activities centered around the use of locally sourced plants and pigments to dye fabrics and paper. The goal is to establish a community-based program designed to educate participants on sustainability, waste reduction, color history, and the science used in creating natural dyes and pigments.
Peepa Show | A surrealist theater and puppetry showcase featuring local musicians and performers, as featured in Athens Rising: The Sicyon Project
tiny ATH gallery | A new artist-run gallery pop-up space in Athens (opening September 6, 2019) that will provide a full social media marketing plan for each exhibiting artist’s show.
Volumes: Scrapstock 3 | A mini-festival produced by Volumes Presents (hip hop media and event planning) that will feature local and regional hip hop artists, comedians, and a market for local businesses and visual artists. The 2019 festival (Scrapstock 2) will be held October 4–5.

Please note: Honeypond Hotel was selected as a finalist for the grant, but they have withdrawn their application. We wish them all the best! Following is Honeypond Hotel’s project summary: A new visual art and music space that will include a recording studio,  rehearsal space, and performing space as well as a place for visiting artists to stay. The venue will host curated music events and art installations to support local and traveling artists.

Learn more about these projects at the last Get Artistic Art Party of the year, where the finalists’ project proposals will be featured in our first-ever “DIY Fair”. Can’t make the event, but still curious? The proposals will also be displayed in our CCBC Gallery from August 20 through September 1, 2019. Creature Comforts will offer the opportunity for the public to vote for their favorite project at the event and online throughout the exhibition.

Get Artistic grants are also offered to Athens-based individual artists and arts-focused nonprofits. The deadline for the next round of grant applications is September 1, 2019 (funding disbursed in late 2019 for 2020). Information about these grant opportunities can be found here.
