Presented by Get Artistic, The Broadside Exhibition Project is an annual show of curated collaborations between local poets and artists. Now in its second year, The Broadside Exhibition Project: Verse 2 showcases eight illustrated poems with the originals exhibited in the CCBC Gallery and reproductions displayed in the Watkinsville Woods city park (July 23–August 18, 2019). Verse 2 features the following artists (listed first) and poets:

May Hitchings & Grace Donnelly
Christopher Ingham & Meredith Elder
Savannah Jensen & Savannah Guenthner
Abby Kacen & Mariah Parker
Jackie Kirsche & Lisa Smartt
Gunnar Tarsa & Wesley Peebles
Abigail West & Lindsay Troutman
Chris Xavier & Paul Cunningham

What is a broadside? In printing and graphic design, a broadside is simply a single-sided document. Broadsides have been utilized throughout printmaking history for advertisements, posters, and other public notices, but also for more artistic purposes like showcasing poetry or song lyrics. For this project, we are defining broadsides to be illustrated poems. These broadsides provide a uniquely communal experience of a form of art that is typically enjoyed privately and intellectually, as in a book of poetry.

In the pursuit of leveraging our business to remove barriers for working artists, Get Artistic aims to create opportunities for Creature Comforts’ community and consumers to connect with art in dynamic ways. When we bring people together, with art and with beer, we strengthen our community bonds and enliven our creative spirit. This is why The Broadside Exhibition Project is one-part gallery show, one-part public art project.

This year, the Get Artistic program provided stipends for each artist and poet in the show. The original works of art will be for sale through Creature Comforts’ retail store July 18–August 18, and digital prints for sale through The K.A. Artist Shop through August 2019. All sales will benefit the artist and poet, with a small percentage going back to the Get Artistic fund.

Thank you to our partners, whose support makes this project possible:

  • The K.A. Artist Shop will sell made-to-order digital prints of the broadsides in various sizes in July and August 2019. Place your order online or visit the store, located a few blocks from Creature Comforts in downtown Athens.
  • The Oconee Cultural Arts Foundation (OCAF) has partnered with Get Artistic to facilitate the display of poster-sized prints of the broadsides in the Watkinsville Woods as the summer installment of the Art in the Park, a program sponsored by the city of Watkinsville. The 6-acre park is located approximately 1-mi from OCAF, or about 20 minutes from Creature Comforts’ downtown Athens taproom. Learn more about OCAF’s art exhibitions, studio art classes, memberships, camps, and more online.
