Get Artistic seeks to strengthen Athens, Georgia’s creative community by removing obstacles for artists. We believe that by leveraging the resources of our time, space, and money, we can empower creative people to be the change they want to see in their community.
Since the program’s 2018 launch, our community of beer lovers and arts advocates like you have helped us to invest $223,959 in the creative economy, $63,766 having been disbursed through direct grantmaking and artist residency support.
This year, Get Artistic looks a bit different than in years past. As with all of our community initiatives, we aim to mold the model to best accomplish our mission. For Get Artistic, the mission is simply to support Athens, Georgia’s vibrant creative community. By funding a rotating Artist-in-Residence (AiR), we hope to create high-impact development opportunities for local artists. And we’re excited to welcome Noraa James as our 2021 AiR.
“This year, we’re shifting to our most direct method to date of individual artist patronage. We’re excited to invest our Get Artistic profits into our community-focused Artist-in-Residence (AiR) program. We’re thrilled to partner with local creator Noraa James as our 2021 Artist-in-Residence and can’t wait for everyone to come alongside us on this journey!”
-Madeline Bates Blankenship, CCBC Hospitality Mgr. & Get Artistic Programming Lead
Graphic designer. Painter. Photographer. Co-director of the Finley Light Factory. Co-creator of tacky! Magazine. This is Noraa James, an Athens-based creator originally from Norfolk, Virginia. We’re pleased to welcome Noraa as our 2021 Artist-in-Residence (AiR).
Noraa’s work is an imaginative exploration into many topics of the beauty and sublimity of Blackness through the scope of Afro-surrealism and Afro-futurism.
“I’m looking forward to the residency as a major contributor to my creative growth and a think tank for ways to provide more innovative support toward marginalized creative communities.”
