In the summer of 2018, we launched the Get Artistic program to contribute to the growth and well being of Athens’ creative community by working to remove obstacles for artists. This work has taken the form of curating arts experiences in our tasting room, acting as patron, sponsor, and grant maker, and advocating for the arts in the Athens community.
We’re thrilled to announce that the program’s 2019 season generated $18,300 that will create six local arts grants to support diverse components of the local arts scene. The 2019 recipients from the nonprofit sector include the Athens Area Arts Council , the Athens Symphony Orchestra, and Canopy Studio. Independent artists Abigail West and Broderick Flanigan as well as the DIY exhibition space tinyATH Gallery will also receive grants to support their work.
In addition to generating grant funding this year, we created opportunities for dozens of local artists to continue their work and showcase it at our downtown Athens tasting room, from exhibitions of original artwork to poetry readings and beyond. Much of that work is documented in the Get Artistic archives. Through these enriching experiences, we intend to help artists connect with one another, with members of the community, and with the invaluable local arts resources that make our city a better place to live.
We generated the funds primarily through the release of our Get Artistic beer and merchandise, available during the Get Artistic season of emphasis (summer 2019). Inspired by white wine, the quintessential drink of gallery receptions everywhere, the 2019 Get Artistic beer is a pale ale (5.5%) hopped with Nelson Sauvin and Hallertau Blanc hops, which present notes of white wine grapes.
To everyone who bought a pint of Get Artistic beer, a Get Artistic t-shirt, or a work of art in our CCBC Gallery shows in 2019: thank you. With each purchase, you directly contribute to the beauty and betterment of our home.
